Steller Systems Supports DESG Graduate Scheme

Thursday, January 25th, 2018

This week Steller Systems says goodbye to MOD graduate Jamie Wright, who has been working with us for the last six months on a placement as part of the Defence Engineering and Science Group (DESG) Graduate Scheme.  During his time with us, Jamie has worked on, and gained experience of, a variety of projects.  These include helping to assess a Royal Navy vessel against the IMO Polar Code, conducting structural analysis and calculations for a foreign vessel, producing design documentation for ship modifications, conducting ship visits and, most recently, helping to design and build Steller Systems’ entry for the QinetiQ Industry Powerboat Challenge.  He has also co-authored and presented an entry to the IMarEST/RINA Western Joint Branch Design Challenge and is currently co-authoring a paper with Steller Systems’ staff for presentation later this year at the INEC 2018 conference.

The placement is part of a reciprocal arrangement with MOD, which has seen one of Steller Systems’ graduates conducting a placement in the MOD’s Naval Authority Group (NAG).

The whole team has really enjoyed working with Jamie.  We wish him the best of luck with his next placement and look forward to working with him in the future.

Steller Systems Competing in IMarEST/RINA Western Joint Branch Design Challenge 2017

Monday, December 4th, 2017

Two of Steller Systems’ naval architects are competing in the IMarEST / RINA Design Challenge 2017 this evening.

The challenge, which is run by the Western Joint Branch (a joint branch of RINA and IMarEST), is to design a life boat capable of rescuing up to 1,000 people from the sea at once.  The team has designed an innovative, rapidly-expandable high-capacity lifeboat which is capable of accommodating 1,000 people but which can be deployed and retrieved using existing lifeboat davits.

Steller Systems’ team comprises two of our Graduates:  George Payne, a Graduate Naval Architect, and James Wright, an Engineering Graduate in the MOD who is part-way through a six-month placement at Steller Systems as part of the MOD’s Defence Engineering and Science Group (DESG) Graduate Scheme.

We wish the team the best of luck!

Steller Systems is looking forward to the upcoming publication this spring of the National Ship Building Strategy, in response to Sir John Parker’s November 2016 report.  This called for a “sea change” in naval procurement and a “modern and innovative design” for Type 31e, also known as General Purpose Frigate (GPFF).  Our innovative design, Project Spartan, is a configurable, modular, survivable, affordable and exportable ship, that will meet the requirements for Type 31e whilst also being a highly attractive proposition to export markets.  We have focussed on packing as much UK industrial capability and UK equipment into an attractive package, benefitting the Royal Navy and the UK as a whole.

Our design was recently featured in the Mail Online and the Daily Mirror.

VoyageVert, a not-for-profit organisation, believes that there is a need to create a reliable alternative to flight, and intends to provide a sustainable passenger ferry service to cross the seaways of the world.  It has recently undertaken a successful crowdfunding campaign to progress this exciting project further.
