Steller Systems will be presenting two papers at the 14th International Ship Stability Workshop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in September.
Two of Steller’ naval architects, Dominic Horner and Rick Goddard, will be presenting a paper entitled “Small Combatant Accidental Damage Extents”, which explores the impact on vessel design of moving from a two-compartment damage requirement to a 15% length damage extent, through a series of design explorations on four current small combatants.
Meanwhile Rick Goddard will also present a paper entitled “A New Approach to the Derivation of V-Line Criteria for a Range of Naval Vessels”, which compares heave and roll allowances derived from the probability of water height on the bulkheads bounding the damage. The comparison was conducted in varying sea states and for a number of vessel types, and enabled conclusions to be drawn regarding the suitability of current criteria for a variety of vessels and in particular their sensitivity to sea state.

Steller Systems has been awarded “Judges’ Favourite” in the 2013 QinetiQ Industry Powerboat Challenge in Haslar. This annual competition challenges teams from across the industry to design and build its own radio-controlled model powerboat and race it around a course in QinetiQ’s Ocean Basin Facility. Steller Systems may be used to designing large ships, but it drew upon its naval architecture skills and experience to design, model and build a 700mm shallow-V planning hullform, dubbed the Sea B’Eagle.
The Sea B’Eagle was pitched against 12 other teams from some of the biggest companies in the marine industry. Sea B’Eagle took fourth position in the heats, before crashing out in the final race and ultimately coming in third place. However, Steller Systems’ design won “Judges’ Favourite”, which is awarded every year to the team judged to have displayed the greatest degree of innovation, the best engineered design and the most attractive livery.
