Steller Systems has signed a strategic agreement with SeeByte to be its Autonomy partner for one of Steller Systems’ major projects to develop a highly innovative unmanned vessel.
SeeByte provides clients in the
maritime sector with the most advanced software solutions to enhance the
capabilities of their underwater sensors, vehicles and systems.
Speaking at DSEI, Steller
Systems’ Managing Director Robert Skarda said:
“The signing of this MOU between Steller Systems and SeeByte reflects a major milestone in the development of Steller Systems’ unmanned vehicle project, as well as the growing importance of unmanned vessels to Naval Capability, Steller Systems and the industry as a whole. We are excited about the possibilities for closer collaboration on our projects”.
2019 has seen an increase in unmanned vehicle work for the company, and this year Steller Systems has been at the forefront of their design as well as helping its clients understand the integration of these on to manned vessels, submarines and other systems. In early 2019 the company secured its first contract with the Defence & Security Accelerator, run by the Defence Science & Technology Laboratory (Dstl) in order to conduct tank testing of a highly innovative unmanned vessel concept. Steller Systems’ team also has extensive experience of designing vessels for USVs, such as SPARTAN, our concept design for a light Frigate.

Steller Systems and Thales have launched their design for TX Ship, a ground-breaking vessel that will help navies transition to unmanned operations. The design, which was officially unveiled at the Maritime Capability Conference at DSEI 2019 on Monday, is designed to operate unmanned, but with the intention of operating as a lean-manned vessel with 15 crew in the first instance. Successful and continued operation of TX Ship will give forward thinking navies a clear route to gain confidence in, and to move towards, fully unmanned autonomous naval operations in a cost-effective manner.
TX Ship is a fully sensorised multi-role trimaran, capable of operating at reach, alone or as part of a task group. The ship possesses an unusual high capacity, fully-automated mission bay capable of hosting and deploying a large number, and multiple types, of manned or unmanned mission packages. The stern access and moon pool features enable flexible and covert deployment of a wide range of current and future unmanned aerial, surface and subsurface vessels. At a length of 70m and 750 tonne displacement, TX Ship has a top speed of 30 knots, a design cruise speed of 18 knots, a range of 6000nm and an endurance of 20 days (manned) or 40 days (unmanned).
The vessel has been designed to
be a multi-role platform, including Mine Countermeasures (MCM), Intelligence,
Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR), strategic Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW)
and patrol.

Tim joins us from Dyson and has a
broad range of experience
across the defence sector, having worked as a systems engineer for Ultra
Electronics, MBDA and GE Aviation. Tim
will lead our systems engineering offering, initially supporting our existing
contracts in the submarine and unmanned vehicle sectors. Tim will be based at
our head office in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire.
Rob joins us from BMT where he
was Senior Naval Architect. Rob has
experience in the design, engineering, development, testing and optimisation of
innovative high-speed craft for a wide range of projects across defence, oil
and gas, commercial, yacht and renewable energy markets. Rob will be based at our new office in
Fareham, Hampshire.
Steller Systems is looking forward to meeting current and future customers and partners at Defence & Security Equipment International (DSEI) 2019 from the 10th – 13th September 2019. On display will be several of Steller Systems’ innovative naval surface and subsurface concepts including our light frigate design, Project Spartan. Spartan is a 117m, 2,964 tonne surface combatant that is designed for the export market to be configurable, modular, survivable and affordable.

Steller Systems is pleased to announce that William Edge has joined Steller Systems as Chief Engineer for our Marine Engineering department. William will be responsible for overseeing delivery of all of our marine engineering projects, working alongside our existing team of marine engineers and naval architects.
Will joins us at a time of unprecedented growth at Steller
Systems, with major contracts underway to conduct surface ship concept design,
submarine naval architecture and the development of an innovative unmanned
platform. William will be based at our head
office in Nailsworth but will be working closely with Steller Systems’ team in
both Gloucestershire and Hampshire.
Steller Systems has recently been awarded a contract with the MOD’s Defence and Security Accelerator to further develop a ground-breaking unmanned maritime vessel.
The Defence & Security Accelerator, part of the Ministry
of Defence, finds and funds exploitable innovation to support UK defence and
security quickly and effectively.
The MOD’s investment in Steller Systems’ design will enable
its growing team of innovative naval architects and marine engineers to
finalise the design and conduct scale model testing in order demonstrate its
utility to UK defence.
In the last few months Steller
Systems has welcomed four new staff to the team.
Kit Harris has joined our Submarines team as a Principal Naval Architect after fourteen years in various naval architecture roles in DE&S. Meanwhile Guy Hope has joined us from Ultra Electronics PMES as a Business Development Manager with particular responsibility for marine engineering.
We have also welcomed two new Naval Architects to the team; Daisy Brooks has joined us from Lewmar and Ross Gordon has joined us from DE&S. Both Daisy and Ross will be based at our new office on the south coast that will be opening shortly.
